Aug. 19, 2008
MILWAUKEE - Senior guard Krystal Ellis was one of 25 players named to the "Wade Watch" list for the State Farm Wade Trophy Division I Player of the Year, announced Tuesday by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, on behalf of the Wade Coalition. The 25-member list is made up of the top Division I student-athletes who best embody the spirit of Lily Margaret Wade according to the following criteria: game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team and overall playing ability. "We are so thrilled and excited that Krystal has been named to this prestigious list," said head coach Terri Mitchell. "Her being among this group of 25 outstanding young women is a testament to her hard work, dedication and the impact she has had on our program. For her to be recognized on a national scale is not only a huge accomplishment for her, but for the Marquette women's basketball program as well." Ellis is a two-time All-BIG EAST First Team honoree and 2007 Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention selection. For the 2007-08 season, Ellis led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 19.4 ppg., an average that ranked second in the BIG EAST. She was named the 2008 WNIT MVP after averaging 23.2 ppg. over MU's five tournament games. The State Farm Wade Trophy, now in its 32nd year and named after the late, legendary three-time national champion Delta State University coach, Lily Margaret Wade, debuted in 1978 as the first-ever women's national player of the year award in college basketball. The highly prestigious award, regarded as the "Heisman of Women's Basketball," is organized by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), in conjunction with the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS). The 2009 State Farm Wade Trophy winner will be announced at the WBCA National Convention held in conjunction with the NCAA Women's Final Four in St. Louis, Mo., April 3-7, 2009.
